Writing about Roy Cane's The Happy Cafe (see below) brings me neatly to the culinary event of the week: the opening of Antonio Carluccio's new restaurant in Stratford. And very good it is too.
Hilary and I started by having coffee there last Sunday lunchtime, and ended-up staying for dinner. I had one of the best steaks I 've ever tasted (sourced from the West Country and hung for twenty-one days), washed down by an excellent Chianti Classico.
Being a Carluccio establishment, the restaurant is much more than just that, it is an experience of not only smells and tastes, but of attitude and professionalism and attention to detail. It's also a shop and a deli and somewhere where you can nurse a cup of coffee and read some Hemingway, and where, if you get a glass of white wine spilled over you, as happened to me Sunday evening, the waitress doesn't panic but gets you, the table, and the floor, cleaned up and a fresh glass of wine into my wife's hand in less than a minute. That's service.
We'll be there again on Friday.
